From the Fromathèque to the Fromagerie de Martigny: Our history

You may not be aware of it, but our expertise in cheese production goes back over ten years, long before we officially opened our cheese dairy two years ago.

A decade of experience

In fact, our adventure began at Fromathèque in 2013, where over nine rewarding years we had the privilege of winning numerous awards, some of them world-class.

From the Fromathèque to the Fromagerie de Martigny

As you probably know, the Fromathèque has always made some of the cheeses available in the shop. A victim of its own success, in 2022 the Fromathèque embarked on an ambitious but necessary project: to expand the bar and shop areas while meeting the growing demand for sheep's and goat's milk products in the Valais. As a result, production was transferred to the Martigny industrial estate under a new independent entity, Fromagerie de Martigny, capable of producing up to ten times more than before.

Swiss Cheese Awards

In 2016, the Fromathèque entered the "Brebis BIO Mi-vieux" cheese, much appreciated by its customers, in the Swiss Cheese Awards competition. One morning, Yan Sütterlin, co-director, received an unexpected call: our sheep's cheese had been crowned "Best sheep's cheese in Switzerland", much to the pride of the entire cheese team.

World Championship Cheese Contest

On the strength of this national victory, we decided to enter our sheep's milk cheese in the World Championship Cheese Contest two years later. We also received the fantastic news by phone: our sheep's cheese, which had already won an award in Switzerland, had just won the title of best sheep's cheese in the world. This exceptional victory quickly made the rounds of the local newspapers, a small Swiss cheese dairy triumphing on the international stage being unusual.

At the Fromagerie de Martigny, we've kept the same dynamic and spirit as the Fromathèque. Our passion for innovation and quality remains intact, while respecting our traditional, artisanal values. We are committed to paying our local milk producers well and to integrating sustainable practices into every aspect of our production.
